Queen’s/Grace Jackson meet cancelled
The Queen’s/Grace Jackson Development Meet, which had been scheduled for January 31, became the latest athletic event to be cancelled on Thursday.
“The Organising Committee for the Queen’s Grace Jackson Meet regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2026 event. We apologise for the short notice and appreciate your understanding. We look forward to rebuilding and hosting a stronger event in 2027,” was the terse statement from the organising committee.
The annual track and field developmental meet began 24 years ago in 2002.
It was named in honour of the great Grace Jackson, who attended Queen’s High and was on the team that won their only Girls Champs title in 1979. She went on to represent Jamaica with honour, winning a silver medal in the 200m at the 1988 Olympic Games. She was the Jamaican record holder for both the 200m and 400m and won the Sportswoman of the Year on two occasions in 1986 and 1988.
The cancellation of the Queen’s/Grace Jackson meet is the latest in a string of athletic events scheduled for this year that have been called off.
It was recently announced that Western Relay, which was scheduled for February 14, has been cancelled.
There will also be no Racers Grand Prix this year, as the organisers called it off due to what they said were funding challenges.
The Central Hurdles Relays also announced its cancellation, but had a U-turn when organisers found out the resurfacing at GC Foster has been put on hold. It is scheduled for January 24.
