JPs encouraged to uphold vital role as front-line community leaders
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Justices of the peace (JPs) have been encouraged to continue their vital role as front-line community leaders, serving as the first point of contact for citizens and helping to safeguard legal and social order across Jamaica.
Speaking during a virtual JP Sensitisation Session on Thursday, State Minister in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Marisa Dalrymple‑Philibert, commended JPs for their ongoing service and underscored the importance of their responsibilities in fostering community engagement.
She noted that JPs play a key role in guiding citizens to properly understand documentation, thereby helping to prevent fraud, misinformation, and unlawful transactions.
“As trusted community figures, JPs have a very important role to play in helping citizens to understand the value of having proper documentation and the steps involved in securing legal titles,” the state minister said.
Dalrymple‑Philibert further encouraged JPs to continuously strengthen their knowledge and assist the public by verifying documents, explaining procedures, and guiding individuals to the appropriate authorities for support.
Beyond their legal duties, she added, JPs play a pivotal role in guiding citizens, safeguarding their rights, and promoting stability within communities.
