Market Bag: Food prices steady, egg supplies improving
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — There is limited movement in food prices at the Linstead market this week as the cost of produce held largely steady compared to last weekend.
Tomatoes ($400 a pound), Irish potato ($300), sweet potato ($300), onion ($200) and ginger ($300) are among the items fetching the same price this week.
Meanwhile, the prices of Scotch bonnet pepper ($300) and lettuce ($300) have dropped significantly.
There’s also good news for egg lovers as supplies appear to be steadily improving following the devastation to the sector by Hurricane Melissa.
“The shortage is still there, but [supplies] are coming back slowly,” egg farmer Nekeisha Graham of Niki’s Yolk told Observer Online during her guest appearance in this week’s Market Bag.
