Seaton’s time
Jamaica footballer eager to make mark for World Girls FC
In the unforgiving world of professional football, opportunities are oftentimes fleeting. But for Tiny Seaton, the moment she’s been dreaming of has arrived sooner rather than later.
The 19-year-old Jamaican striker is set to make her professional debut with World Girls FC this Friday in the Liberia Football Association (LFA) Women’s First Division, and she’s bursting with confidence.
Seaton, who is on a four-month loan to World Girls FC, will play against Determine Girls at the SKD Practice Pitch, making her the first Jamaican player to feature in the LFA Women’s First Division.
“I feel really good about this. This is a wonderful feeling to get my first professional experience and to start my professional football career,” Seaton told the Jamaica Observer from her base in Liberia, West Africa.
“World Girls FC wanted a striker and so Mr Eddie Kingston, who is a part of the club, reached out to Frazsiers Whip and they picked me to go on a loan and I am so grateful for the opportunity. I know there will be many hurdles to cross but this is just the beginning of it and I am going to make the best of it,” added Seaton, a former player at Excelsior High School, a many-time champion in the school league.
Seaton’s journey to this point has been marked by grit and perseverance. Growing up, she dreamed of going pro, and now’s her chance to make a statement.
“Yes, it has always been my dream to play professional football. While growing up, I was like, I can’t wait to go pro; I haven’t reached there yet, it is just the beginning, as I said,” she stated.
As she prepares to face Determine Girls, Seaton’s focus is razor-sharp. Determine Girls leads the standings with 29 points from 11 games consisting of nine wins and two draws, while World Girls are third on 24 points, also from 11 games courtesy of seven wins, three draws, and one defeat.
“Determine Girls, the number one in the league. They are the talk of the town and so I am going into that game to execute, demolish defenders, and just to get the work done,” Seaton said.
Seaton’s training with World Girls FC has been a positive experience, and she’s relishing the challenge of playing at a higher level.
“Training has been good; the coaches and the players are very understanding. You know, what I don’t understand I can talk to them. If I don’t understand a specific drill, they will help and lets me understand,” she explained.
The climate in Liberia hasn’t been a problem for Seaton, who says it’s similar to Jamaica.
“The climate conditions here are just like Jamaica. The heat, the sun is always out. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it’s windy, but overall it is good and I have gotten used to it … and so everything is good,” noted Seaton.
As she embarks on this new chapter, Seaton’s clear about her goals.
“You can look forward to me scoring goals and creating other opportunities. After this I want to get a contract to play football in Europe to make my football career go bigger. Here [in Liberia], I am working hard, executive, and make my name so the whole world can see me.” she stated.
For Seaton, football has been a journey worth taking.
“There’re no regrets choosing football,” she said.
“I mean, football can break you and it can make you but there’s no regret in it. Football brought me to where I am today. There were a lot of heartbreaks and joyful moments during my football career but I have to honest, it [football] is the best choice I have made,” Seaton said.
