KC flex muscles in sprint hurdles at McKenley/Wint Classic

Kingston College (KC) dominated the sprint hurdles at the McKenley/Wint Classic, while Dujhauntai Lewis of Calabar upstaged Kenya’s Ryna Achau of St Jago in the 800m on Saturday on the grounds of Calabar High School.

KC won all three classes in the sprint hurdles, sending a strong message to their rivals that they will be piling on the points at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championship come March.

Drequan Jones got the ball rolling for KC, winning the Class Three 100m hurdles time final with the fastest time of 14.03 seconds. Dylan Bent of Manchester High was second in 14.44, with KC’s Zachary Hunter third in 14.45.

In Class Two, KC’s Brandon Bennett, who had the fastest 400m hurdles clocking two weeks ago, showed that he will be hard to beat in the shorter sprint, clocking 14.13. His teammate Daquan Dawkins was second with 14.35, while Calabar’s Jordon McBean was third in 14.40.

KC’s Taj-Oneil Gordon sped to 13.72 to win the Class One 110m hurdles, as the first five places all went to the boys from North Street.

Michael Dwyer was second in 14.30, Timothy Purrier finished third in 14.57, while Nathan Dodd (14.92) and Jurel Clement (14.97) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Meanwhile, Lewis turned back the challenge of Ryan Achau of St Jago to win the Class One 800m in 1:54.73. He went to the front and repelled every challenge from the Kenyan for a comfortable victory. Achau clocked 1:55.20.

Lewis again brought the house down in the 400m, this time beating his former schoolmate Aleandro Palmer, now representing KC. Lewis chased him down the stretch and ran past him to win easily in 49.48. The Calabar faithful were pleased that Palmer’s return to his old school in rival colours was not a successful one. Palmer clocked 50.39.

Lewis’s time placed him ninth overall behind the winner, Jabulani McLeod of KC, who clocked 48.20. It was a quinella for KC, as Markel Smith was second best, stopping the clock at 48.27 in winning his heat.

The stage is set in Class Two, as last year’s top two 400m runners at Champs, Jason Pitter of KC and Calabar’s Diwayne Sharpe, looked good in winning their heats. Sharpe won her heat impressively in 47.31, appearing much improved. Pitter, in his first run of the season, was relaxed in winning his heat in 48.09.

Last year, Pitter won in 47.92, with Sharpe second in 48.30, but Sharpe has already taken a second off his personal best, setting the stage for when both meet face to face later this season.

Darrian Francis of Lacovia High was the fastest in Class Three, winning in 52.03, ahead of Amarie O’Sullivan of Calabar with 53.06 and Jayden Bailey of KC with 53.79.

In the girls’ section, Natalia Moore of Penwood won the Open 400m hurdles in 1:09.99, just ahead of Tehara Temple of Covenant of Mercy Academy, who clocked 1:10.01.

Akaylia Barrett of Manchester High took the Girls’ Class One long jump with 5.11m, ahead of Morissa Heslop of Camperdown High with 5.03m. Rihanna Chambers of St Catherine High was third, also with 5.03m.

In the Class Two long jump, Ashley Barrett of Immaculate Conception High leapt 4.99m for the win, ahead of Gabriella Treasure of St Caterine High with 4.94m.

Tashanti Fearon of Alpha Academy captured the Class Three discus with a throw of 27.83m. Toriann Dixon of Marymount High was second with 26.96m, while Sarafina Swaby finished third with 25.25m.

In the Class Three 800m, Warreka Hyman of Ferncourt High won in 2:27.25, while Latoya Williams of The Queens School took the Class Two event in 2:21.31, and her teammate Keyah Anderson won the Class One race in 2:23.13.
