West Indies Under-19 win again
The West Indies made a winning start in the Super Six stage of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, beating Ireland by 25 runs via the Duckworth/Lewis format.
This, was after rain brought an abrupt end to the game at the High Performance Oval at Windhoek, Namibia on Sunday.
The West Indies won the toss, elected to bat and made 226 runs, being bowled out in the 47th over. Jewel Andrews top-scored with 66 runs from 82 balls, inclusive of 4x4s and 4x6s.
Jonathan Van Lange hit 28 runs with 3x4s and a six, Aadian Racha chipped in with 28 and the inning got a well-needed boost at the end as tailender Vitel Lawes struck 18 runs with 2x4s and a six.
Bowling for Ireland, Reuben Wilson took 3-50, Luke Murray 2-37 and James West 2-24 as they restricted the West Indies to what was a reachable score.
Ireland never allowed the West Indies to build, with the first wicket falling at 20-1, then 30-2, 67-3 in 16 overs before any real partnership could blossom but Andrew and Lange put on 67 runs before Lange fell at 134-4.
When Ireland replied, they started steadily reaching 47 runs before losing their first wicket, that of Fred Ogilby for 14 runs in the 13th over.
Opener James West made 45 with 8x4s and Robert Obrien hit 26 runs without hitting a boundary from 50 balls. Marko Bates made 22 runs.
But with Ireland at 164/7 in 40 overs still needing 62 runs from 60 deliveries, rain stopped play. Eventually, with no further play possible, West Indies were declared the winner by 25 runs via the D/L method.
Player-of-the-match Micah McKenzie captured 4-36 for the West Indies from his 10 overs and Vitel Lawes took 2-41.
The West Indies will face Australia next on Wednesday in a most crucial encounter. Australia are on six points with the West Indies on four points.
