Dwyane Vaz threatens legal action against Julian Chang over sexual harassment claims
KINGSTON, Jamaica —Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central, Dwayne Vaz, is threatening to take legal action against Councillor Julian Chang (People’s National Party), Savanna-la-Mar Division, amid sexual harassment allegations raised by Chang against Vaz.
In a letter issued to Chang on Tuesday, Vaz’s attorneys, Knight, Junior, and Samuels, called for Chang to issue a public apology and withdraw what they said are ‘false’ and ‘defamatory’ statements made by Chang concerning their client during a recent radio interview.
“You alleged that your political career was being destroyed by our client as a consequence of your refusal to accede to his alleged sexual advances. You accused our client of stating that you were fixing labourite roads. You further alleged that our client removed you from your position as chairman of the Savanna-la-Mar division,” Vaz’s attorneys said in the letter, describing the statements as entirely false.
They noted that an election was held in the Savanna-la-Mar division, reportedly attended by Chang; however, they noted that she was neither nominated for any office nor elected to any position by members voting in the election.
The attorneys said Chang’s statements have caused and continue to cause serious damage to their client’s reputation.
Chang is being asked to issue a public apology and withdraw the statement on the radio on or before January 30.
Vaz won the Westmoreland Central constituency on the PNP’s ticket in the 2025 General Election, defeating the Jamaica Labour Party’s George Wright by over 1,500 votes.
In the 2020 polls, Wright defeated Vaz, securing 53.76 per cent of 15,678 votes casted.
