Jamaican schools set three records at New York International Showcase
JAMAICAN high schools produced three national and facility records at the second staging of the New York International Showcase at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island on Saturday.
Junior sprint standout Shanoya Douglas, Jamaica College’s boys’ 4×200 metres relay team and Hydel High’s girls’ 4×200 metres quartet accounted for the record-breaking performances at the indoor meet, founded by Jamaican Olympian Sanjae Ayre.
Douglas broke her own national Under-20 indoor 300-metre record, clocking 36.98 seconds to win comfortably. The 18-year-old led from the start and finished well ahead of Breanne Barnett of Baldwin High School in New York, who placed second in 38.08 seconds, with Rhia Randolph of West Orange High School in New Jersey third in 38.16.
The winning time also established a new facility record, improving on the 37.32 seconds set by Elise Cooper of McDonogh School at the Ocean Breeze Elite Invitational in 2024.
Now representing Holland High School after transferring from Muschette High at the start of the academic year to continue working with longtime coach Gary Smythe, Douglas said she was surprised by the performance.
“I did not know that I was running this fast. My aim was to run faster than I did last year,” she said. “I am very happy.”
Douglas had set the previous national Under-20 indoor mark last year with a time of 37.78 seconds in her indoor debut.
JC’s 4×200-metre relay team of DeAndre Gayle, Nathaniel Martin, Omary Robinson and Makaelan Woods won in 1 minute 25.54 seconds, breaking the facility record of 1:26.90 set by Calabar High School at the inaugural meet last year. The time also established a national record. Danbury High School of Connecticut was second in 1:30.30, with Deptford High School of New Jersey third in 1:30.51.
Robinson completed a double after earlier winning the boys’ 400 metres in 48.24 seconds, edging Christian Witcher of Conroe Grand Oaks High School (48.43) and Ryan Buskey of Colonie Central High School (48.83).
Hydel High’s girls’ 4×200 metres quartet of Sashana Johnson, Kevina Bourne, Nastassia Fletcher and Shemonique Hazel won in a national record 1:36.56, smashing the previous facility record of 1:40.00 set at the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games in January 2020. Shaker High School (1:45.72) and East Stroudsburg South Senior High School (1:46.49) finished second and third, respectively.
There were additional Jamaican successes as JC’s Kai Kelly won the boys’ 60 metres in 6.97 seconds, beating Maheem Gardner of Cardinal Hayes High School (7.06) and Clayton Smith of Shenendehowa High School (7.16).
Holland High School’s Johan-Ramaldo Smythe placed second in the boys’ invitational 200 metres in 21.18 seconds, behind Brady Pineo of Wesley Chapel High School in Florida, who won in 21.02.
JC’s DeAndre Gayle finished second in the boys’ invitational 60 metres, clocking 6.87 seconds behind Pineo, who won in 6.82.
In the girls’ invitational 60 metres, Hydel’s Shemonique Hazel was second in 7.61 seconds, beaten by Kennedy Brown of Bullis School in Maryland, who won in 7.53. Brown later completed a double by winning the girls’ invitational 200 metres in 24.25 seconds, ahead of Hydel’s Kevina Bourne (24.55).
