Jumpers Foreman, Cunningham win weekly award
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Horizontal jumpers Shantae Foreman of Clemson University and Lansford Cunningham of Tusculum University were named field events athletes in their respective conferences after achieving programme records last weekend.
Foreman, the former St Jago athlete, was named Atlanta Coast Conference (ACC) women’s field events athlete of the week, while Cunningham, the former Cornwall College athlete, was named the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for NCAA Division 2 Tusculum.
Foreman jumped a world leading and Clemson record 14.17m to win the women’s triple jump at Friday’s Orange and Purple Invitational at Clemson University.
Foreman’s mark on her only attempt in the competition was the second best indoor ever by a Jamaican, broke her previous best of 13.84m set last year, and broke the Clemson record 13.85m set in 2010 by Portugal’s Patricia Mamona.
The mark eclipsed the previous world lead 13.87m set by France’s Clemence Rougier at a meet in Limoges, France, on January 17, and is second on the all-time Jamaican list only behind Suzette Lee’s 14.25m set in Indianapolis in March 1997.
Cunningham jumped a personal best 7.42m to place second in the men’s long jump at the Hokie Invite at Virginia Tech on Saturday, breaking the 7.32m set two weeks earlier to extend his Tusculum record to receive his first weekly recognition.
