Parish council employees to return to court next Thursday
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The two municipal corporation employees allegedly at the centre of a cocaine trafficking case are to appear again in court on February 4.
Trevon Clayton, who is employed to St Ann Municipal Corporation, was again remanded until the next court date, while senior managing accountant at the Trelawny Municipal Council, Latoya Hemmings, had her bail extended when the matter was called up.
They appeared in the St James Parish Court on Tuesday, January 27, to answer to several charges under the Dangerous Drugs Act.
At the next hearing, it is expected that a bail application will be made for Clayton.
Clayton and Hemmings were charged after a team from the Firearms, Narcotics and Investigation Division, during a search, found cocaine in their possession as they attempted to board a flight to New York.
During a security screening, the two were accosted, searched and packages of cocaine were found in the luggage belonging to both individuals.
Clayton, it is said, informed officers that he had ingested cocaine pellets. He was subsequently transported to hospital, where it is reported that he expelled 82 pellets.
Both individuals were detained at the time.
However, on their first court appearance last week, Hemmings was granted bail in the sum of $750,000 on humanitarian grounds due to a medical complication.
She was ordered to surrender her travel documents and to report to the Duncans Police Station on a weekly basis.
