Aswad’s 1988 cover of ‘Don’t Turn Around’ goes gold in New Zealand
Originally recorded by Tina Turner and featured on the B-side of her 1986 hit Typical Male, the song Don’t Turn Around has been covered by several artistes over the years.
Some of the more popular covers are those by Neil Diamond, Ace of Base and British reggae band Aswad.
On January 18, Aswad’s version of Don’t Turn Around was certified gold in New Zealand.
The certification commemorated the digital sales and streaming equivalent of 15,000 units.
Released in 1988, Don’t Turn Around was the first release from Aswad’s 12th studio album, Distant Thunder.
The song topped the UK Singles chart and spent two weeks at #1 in New Zealand in June 1988.
The song made the top 10 in Norway, Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Denmark and Belgium.
Over in the United States, the song charted at #45 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart.
Don’t Turn Around was previously certified silver in the United Kingdom.
