KC, Campion record statement wins in ISSA U-14 football
Kingston College (KC) and Campion College were the big winners on Tuesday as action continued in the ISSA/Grace Mighty Malt Urban Under-14 football competition.
After Tuesday’s results the second-round picture has become clearer for several teams.
Wolmer’s Boys’, one of the big favourites for the title, are already through to the Round of 16 with a game to spare in group E, after beating St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) 3-1 to move to 15 points. This was their first time conceding this season, having scored 40 goals in the campaign.
They are joined as early qualifiers to the next round by Hillel Academy, who are also on 15 points from five games.
In Group B, Kingston College, the defending urban and all-island champions, hammered Charlie Smith High 5-0 on the road to make it four wins from as many games, taking them one step closer to automatic qualification to the Round of 16. KC have yet to concede in the group stage and have already demonstrated that it will take some effort to wrestle the title from North Street.
Campion look set to book their spot from Group F after a big 7-0 win over Kingston Technical at home. Campion sit second in the group on nine points, the same as Calabar in third place on goal difference, but they have played one fewer game than the Red Hills Road-based school.
In the very competitive Group C, St George’s College (nine points) bounced back from a 0-6 defeat to St Catherine High in their last outing, to dismiss Innswood 4-0 and resume their qualification push. The result leaves them three points behind second-place Papine High (12 points) and one behind Eltham High. With the top two going through automatically and four of the six third-place teams also advancing, the Eltham/St George’s clash on the final match day on Tuesday, February 3, is set to potentially decide which team progresses and which will see an end to the season. St Catherine lead the group with 13 points.
Group A leaders Holy Trinity High (12 points) were made to sweat in their 3-2 win over cellar-dwellers Cedar Grove but they know another win will see them through. Excelsior High stayed close with a 1-0 win over St Jago High to move to nine points.
Jamaica College are also expected to challenge for the title but they found things surprisingly difficult against Edith Dalton James High, securing a 2-1 victory in the end, to sit atop Group D on maximum nine points despite playing a game fewer than their opponents.
In the ISSA/Burger King Under-16 competition, Excelsior and Greater Portmore High are the early qualifiers to the Round of 16 with KC and Waterford High registering the biggest wins from Tuesday’s fixtures.
Excelsior climbed to 15 points after their 4-2 win over second-placed St Jago to maintain their grip on Group A, while Greater Portmore are on 10 points after four games in Group D after their 3-1 victory over Vauxhall High.
Waterford recorded the biggest win on the day, an 11-0 result over Pembroke Hall High, while Kingston College hammered Charlie Smith 7-0.
KC (nine points) remained in second place in the group having played a game fewer than leaders Jose Marti Technical (13 points), who tagged Tivoli Gardens High 2-1.
In Group E, STATHS — having played a game fewer — joined Wolmer’s at the top on 12 points after beating the Heroes’ Circle-based school 3-1.
Mona High have played one game fewer but are at the top of Group F after clipping Calabar 2-1. Both Mona and Calabar, along with Hillel, are currently on nine points heading into the last few round of matches.
St George’s College are in control of Group C, maintaining their 100 per cent win record with a 2-0 triumph away to Innswood High to climb to 15 points from their five games.
The competitions are to continue on Friday with a combined 33 games.
