Man fatally shot after allegedly stoning cop in Mandeville

MANCHESTER, Jamaica — A man said to be of unsound mind was fatally shot after he reportedly hurled stones at the police, resulting in a cop nursing a head injury off Caledonia Road in Mandeville on Thursday.

Police have not yet ascertained the man’s identity.

Preliminary reports are that shortly after 3:00 pm the man hurled stones at workers of a furniture and appliance store. The police were called, and during an alleged standoff, the man barricaded himself inside a house before hurling a stone at a policeman, hitting the cop in the head.

The injured policeman reportedly fell to the ground. Police personnel opened fire, hitting the man.

The man was transported to the nearby Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The injured policeman was taken to the hospital. However, his colleagues moved him to a private medical facility due to the overcrowding at the hospital.
