POA head Wayne Cameron charged in FID probe

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Chairman of the Police Officers’ Association (POA), Senior Superintendent of Police Wayne Cameron, has been formally charged with larceny and fraudulent conversion in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities relating to POA funds following a months-long investigation.

The police, in a statement on Thursday, said Cameron, who has been removed from frontline duty, was charged with five counts of fraudulent conversion and six counts of larceny as a servant, arising from the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to the POA.

The charges follow a ruling from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which arose from a detailed and protracted financial investigation conducted by the FID, in collaboration with the JCF and other relevant authorities.

Police indicated that the investigation spanned several months and examined matters concerning the management and application of funds under the control of the POA over a defined period.

The charges follow an attempt by Police Commissioner Kevin Blake to remove Cameron from his position as POA head via a letter dated September 8, 2025 indicating that the chair of the POA should be vacated.

The Supreme Court, however, on January 9, 2026, granted Cameron an application for judicial review of the decisions by Blake in the letter.

The police declined to comment further on the substance of the allegations or the evidence underpinning the charges, noting that the matter is now before the courts.

“The JCF and the FID regret that it was not possible to provide more detailed information earlier. However, transparency must always be balanced against the obligation not to prejudice investigations or judicial proceedings,” the agencies said.

Noting that SSP Cameron is entitled to the full presumption of innocence, the police stressed that the matter will now be determined by the courts.

His court date has been set for February 12, 2026.
