ECJ bids farewell to Tom Tavares-Finson
KINGSTON, Jamaica—The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) on Friday bid farewell to one of its longest-serving members, Senator Thomas Tavares-Finson, who retires on January 31.
ECJ in a media release on Friday, said that during his 20 years of service, Commissioner Tavares-Finson has demonstrated true dedication to preserving Jamaica’s democracy through service to the ECJ.
“I am confident that I echo the sentiments of commissioners past and present when I say I am indeed honoured to have worked with Commissioner Tavares-Finson. He has served with distinction for over 20 years and has certainly left a lasting impact on this organisation. He deserves to be recognised and celebrated for his tremendous achievements and his contribution to advancements in Jamaica’s democracy,” said ECJ Chairman Earl Jarrett.
The ECJ said Tavares-Finson’s extensive electoral and legal experience and expertise have provided guidance and insight on important issues affecting the democratic process and have contributed to the development and enactment of legislation such as Campaign Financing and Political Parties Registration.
“He was a frank, open and honest commissioner who dealt with difficult and challenging situations decisively and effectively. He was serious about ensuring standards in politics and promoted good conduct among political actors and their supporters. Commissioner Tavares-Finson displayed fairness in word and deed, always having the interest of the nation and the commission at heart,” he said.
A newly appointed commissioner, nominated by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, is expected to take office in February.
