Skillibeng talks success
Shake it to the Max (Fly) remix major highlight; pumps So Phenomenal
Dancehall artiste Skillibeng has tasted mainstream success with songs including Crocodile Teeth (remix) and as a featured act on Tyla’s 2024 hit Jump, which also features American rapper Gunna.
Crocodile Teeth (remix) has been certified silver in the United Kingdom, while Jump has racked up a platinum certification in South Africa; gold in the United States, New Zealand, Canada, and in Brazil; and silver in the UK.
Last year Skillibeng and Shenseea were featured on Moliy and Silent Addy’s global monster hit Shake it to the Max (Fly) remix. The song, which dented multiple major charts globally, including the UK and the US Billboard charts, has been certified gold in New Zealand, Greece, the UK, and platinum in France.
Skillibeng says the success of the song has been one of the major highlights of his career over the past year.
“The entire year was a high point in my career because of the Shake it to the Max remix. Also, the Tip (remix) with Nvtzz and Ayetian was another high point for me,” Skillibeng told the Jamaica Observer’s Splash exclusively last week.
The RCA Records recording artiste, who released the album International last summer, said he was familiar with Moliy’s music before he jumped on the remix which took the world by storm.
“I knew of Moliy before the remix. I was introduced to Shake it to the Max from the promotion that Moliy was doing for the original track, as well as my manager, who enlightened me a little bit more about the track,” said Skillibeng.
He continied: “Yes, I knew that the song was going to be a big hit, although I knew it wouldn’t be easy to complement the original as much as I did. The high point for me was performing the song at the MTV Video Music Awards. That was definitely a big deal for us.”
Commenting on the 11-track album International which features collaborations with Vybz Kartel, Moliy, Ty Dolla $ign, Major Lazer, Young Nurdy, Tokischa, Ayetian, and Nvtzz, Skillibeng said that working with Vybz Kartel was like a dream come true.
“It was like a dream collaborating with Vybz Kartel. I still don’t believe it. It was a lot of work that went into creating the album, finding the right beats, and the entire process. I had a lot of fun making the album, especially the collaboration with Moliy. We were in the studio together, but the others were done virtually,” Skillibeng disclosed.
The artiste has kicked off the new year with new music. His latest single, So Phenomenal, released this week, was produced by his long-time producer Gutty Bling Music, who produced his first hit song
Brick Pon Brick.
“Life was the inspiration behind that So Phenomenal. Gutty just wanted a song that would make the ladies dance, so that’s how we came up with So Phenomenal. It feels authentic and organic working with Gutty because of the linkage,” said Skillibeng.
