Organisers pleased with regional stage of senior domino tournament
Davione Mitchell, health organiser for the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC), says she was thrilled with the regional stage of the National Association of Domino Bodies (NABD)/NCSC domino tournament.
The senior citizens’ tournament brought together participants from Kingston, St Thomas, Portland, and St Mary for a fun-filled day of competition and socialisation at Lynch Park in Buff Bay.
St Thomas took home the top spot with 20 points, followed by Kingston with 15 points, and Portland securing third place with 14 points. St Mary finished last with four points in Region Three of the tournament.
“I think it was fun, it was very interesting, and it was my first,” Mitchell said, reflecting on her inaugural experience.
“This initiative fosters community, you know, we are bringing back a sense of normalcy after Hurricane Melissa. It is a sense of family and everybody was having fun,” she added.
While noting that the tournament exceeded her expectations, Mitchell highlighted the benefits of dominoes for seniors.
“We are promoting healthy, active, productive ageing. I cannot play dominoes, I only match, but what I have realised was that a whole heap of mathematics took place in the competition. This keeps your brain active and it is good for the elders,” she explained.
The tournament is part of the NADB’s efforts to promote dominoes and community engagement, with Humbert Davis, NADB president, praising the event’s growth and success.
“We’re thrilled to see the impact this tournament is having on seniors across the island. It’s a game-changer for community engagement,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
“Dominoes is more than just a game — it’s a catalyst for connection and healthy living. We’re proud to see this tournament continue to grow. The NABD is committed to promoting domino as a tool for socialisation and healthy ageing. We’re proud to partner with NCSC to bring this tournament to seniors across the island,” Davis said.
Region Two — consisting of St Andrew, St Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, and St Elizabeth — will face off at St Elizabeth Technical High School on February 5.
