Alas, nothing — save salvation — is deemed to last forever. The label, started by two children of Jamaican immigrants, combining Wong’s mother’s name Greta, and that of Pickersgill’s grandfather’s, Constantine, is now entirely helmed by Pickersgill. Wong has departed to work in film and theatre. Pickersgill has gone solo and has not looked back!

“I don’t get distracted. I’m very regulated like that,” he says. We digress somewhat as he relates that there have never been financial backers. His personal credo: “I learn from the past, live in the present, and dream about the future.”

Twenty years later, he reflects with SO on the moments that have caused him to pause, shed tears or simply smile. “I cried like a baby,” he shares when Time magazine not only carried American poet and activist Amanda Gorman in a glorious sunshine yellow Greta Constantine design on the cover, but for the first time actually credited the design house. “Her stylist, Jason Bolden, told me that she was immediately drawn to the dress as the colour signified hope.”

There have been other highlights with Hollwood A-Listers like Viola Davis and Niecey Nash choosing the label for red carpet appearances.

As he readies to visit Jamaica later this month to bring home his father’s ashes, catch up with relatives, and bask in some well-needed sunshine, he’s mindful and indeed appreciative of the hardship and changes… “You’ve got to put yourself in motion and remain confident. I am responsible for 15 full-time members of staff and, by extension, their families; our PR in Los Angeles, plus production teams.

It’s safe to say that with 20 years down, there are decades more to go. Plus, Pickersgill shares exclusively with SO that he plans to make his dream of making shoes a reality!
