WATCH: Over 30 firefighters battle blaze at Ammar’s Department Store
KINGSTON, Jamaica — More than 30 firefighters are battling a major blaze at Ammar’s two-storey department store on King Street in downtown Kingston.
Acting Superintendent of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), Courtney Thompson, said the brigade received the call alerting them of the fire at 10:13 am on Sunday.
“On arrival, the first unit from York Park Fire Station observed large volumes of smoke coming from the building and immediately requested additional assistance,” Thompson said. “Support came from Half-Way Tree, Rollington Town, Trench Town, and additional units from York Park.”
He noted that it has been challenging for firefighters to gain entry into the building due to smoke and other poisonous gases trapped inside.
The estimated cost of the damage has not yet been determined.
“We have not conducted any investigation into the damage and associated risks as yet. A team of investigators will be arriving on the scene to carry out that assessment,” Thompson added.
He confirmed that neighbouring buildings remain intact, providing a measure of relief amid the blaze.
