JPS transformers earmarked for restoration effort in Westmoreland destroyed by vandals
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica—The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says several of its transformers that were scheduled for installation to support electricity restoration works in Westmoreland have been destroyed by acts of vandalism.
According to the company in a media release Tuesday evening, the transformers were left overnight at a church property in the parish in order to begin restoration the following morning as part of preparation work.
“When JPS teams returned to begin installation, they discovered that the units had been disassembled and copper components removed from their interiors,” JPS said.
The energy company noted that the actions not only damage critical infrastructure but also slow the restoration process and prolong the inconvenience experienced by customers awaiting electricity supply.
JPS is urging members of the public to help protect electricity infrastructure by reporting suspicious activity, and is appealing to anyone with information related to the incident to make an official report to the nearest police station.
