St Elizabeth farmer charged following $30m cocaine seizure at Sangster International Airport
KINGSTON, Jamaica—A St Elizabeth farmer has been slapped with several charges following the seizure of 48 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $30 million at the Sangster International Airport on Monday, January 26.
Renaldo Brooks has been charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, attempting to export cocaine and conspiracy to export cocaine.
Reports are that anomalies were detected during an electronic examination of a suitcase at the airport that was destined for Canada.
A physical search of the luggage revealed several sachets containing the cocaine.
Brooks surrendered to the police at the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) Area 1 office in Montego Bay, St James on Monday, February 2, accompanied by his attorney.
He was charged following a question-and-answer interview.
Superintendent Patrae Rowe, director of the FNID, previously noted that heightened vigilance at Jamaica’s ports remains a priority to disrupt the narcotics trade and bring offenders to justice.
Brooks is scheduled to appear in the St James Parish Court on Friday, February 6.
