Morgan accuses Golding of hypocrisy over failure to act against Dennis Gordon
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Government Senator Marlon Morgan has accused People’s National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding over what he described as a prolonged failure to remove Dennis Gordon from Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and to secure his resignation as PNP Region 3 chairman.
In a statement, Morgan said Golding’s inaction undermines his public claims of being a defender of transparency, accountability and probity.
Morgan’s comments followed media reports that JACDEN, a company owned by Gordon, benefited from the University Hospital of the West Indies’ (UHWI) inappropriate use of its tax exemption status to import 12 dialysis machines.
According to a report by the auditor general, the UHWI’s use of its tax exemption breached customs laws and effectively resulted in a $10-million tax waiver being granted to JACDEN.
Senator Morgan says Golding’s evasive answers at a recent PNP media conference regarding the JACDEN/Dennis Gordon/Tax Exemption saga are unacceptable and show that Golding is hypocritical when he claims to believe in principles of accountability and transparency.
Morgan says Golding should be reminded of his bold proclamation on the 2025 campaign trail when he stated that he is against actions which deprive Jamaica of valuable tax dollars but make a few cronies with political connections richer instead of benefiting the people.
Senator Morgan added that Golding’s failure to act by removing Gordon from the PAC and securing his resignation as PNP Region 3 chairman, despite the issue being in the public domain for several weeks, shows that he cannot be taken seriously when he speaks on issues of probity, accountability, and transparency.
According to Senator Morgan, even if Golding were to act now concerning the Dennis Gordon/JACDEN scandal, it would be too little too late, as his hesitation has already confirmed that he takes positions on national issues based on political opportunism and not principle.
