Market Bag: Tomato at $100, lettuce for $200 as prices lower at ‘Curry’
Banana and plantain still scarce
KINGSTON, Jamaica – There are “good” prices for food items at the Coronation Market this week as crops continue to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Melissa just over three months ago.
“Since the storm, the things dem come back so pretty, we have all tomato for $100 and $60 a pound, but banana, plantain and papaya are still scarce,” said a vendor affectionately known as “Princess”.
Shoppers at the downtown Kingston market on Thursday expressed similar sentiments.
“The market is ok today, the prices are good,” one female consumer told Observer Online, adding “The only thing I bought that was expensive today is lemon.”
Apart from tomatoes, among the produce attracting lower prices this weekend are lettuce, which is being sold for $200 a pound; melon, $150; and onion, $200.
