Pack Plays dominates Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy
Trainer Ricardo Mathie praised his team’s discipline and tactical awareness after Pack Plays was reprogrammed after a scratchy previous outing and brought back fresh to deliver a solid performance in the $1.75-million Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy at Caymanas Park on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Pack Plays, ridden by Christopher Mamdeen, in another super-sprinting display, pulled off a stunning upset, outpacing favourite Of a Revolution in the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward by 2¾ lengths over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m). The final time was 1:19.0 (24.0 x 47.2 x 1:12.3).
“I didn’t have any worries in the race, I knew that he would be the lone speed in the race and so he just had to go in front and take it from there. He was reprogrammed and he came in a little bit lighter in weight as well and he performed very well,” Mathie said.
He added: I am satisfied with how he ran, it is early days in the season and so we just have to watch him and see how he comes out of this race and take it from there.”
Running with the Blinkers and Tongue-tie on, Pack Plays (Stay Thirsty – Standard Deal) set the pace from the start easily. He led ahead of Digital One (Dane Dawkins), Supremasi (Jaheim Anderson),
Grivano (Robert Halledeen), and Of a Revolution (Raddesh Roman).
Pack Plays maintained his gallop throughout the race and responded well when asked to run in deep stretch, winning handily at the wire. Of a Revolution came on late to get second place ahead of
Digital One in third place.
“Well, coming into this race the trainer didn’t give me any instructions. I have been on this horse for the last two weeks and so I knew this horse pretty much,” Mamdeen said.
“I was pretty much comfortable throughout the race and so I had no worries whatsoever. From I broke from the gates, it was just easy flow. I mean, he didn’t come off the bit for even a second. He had a lot in the tank left,” Mamdeen further said.
