Jamaica vs Uruguay: Davis Cup tied at 1-1
President of Tennis Jamaica John Azar says he was elated but exhausted following two grueling matches that left Jamaica and Uruguay locked at 1-1 in their Davis Cup Group Two qualifier at the Eric Bell Centre on Saturday.
Jamaica fell behind in the first game as Rowland “Randy” Phillips lost in straight sets – 3-6, 6-7 – to Franco Roncadelli of Uruguay.
But Blaise Bicknell survived a spirited comeback by Joaquin Aguilar Cardoza after blowing a 5-2 lead in the third set to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, leaving the tie delicately poised at 1-1.
“Truthfully, if you saw the two matches, we could easily be up 2-0 and we could just as easily be down 2-0,” Azar pointed out.
“I think 1-1 is a fair result for the day’s play, but definitely it was an enthralling day of tennis from start to finish,” he added.
“Blaise Bicknell saved five match points. Well, he was ahead in the third set 5-2, then he was down 6-5 and had to save three match points. A real rollercoaster. It was a nail-biter, no question about it,” said Azar.
There will be three games tomorrow, with a double match followed by the reverse single games.
Jamaica will be represented by Daniel Azar and Nicholas Gore in the men’s double and will face Roncadelli and Cardoza before Bicknell plays Roncadelli and Phillips takes on Cardoza.
