Private motor vehicle drivers and passengers drive up road deaths
Of the 26 people who have been killed in motor vehicle crashes since the start of the year, 17 were drivers of private motor vehicles and their passengers.
This is according to the latest daily crash statistics released by the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) on Friday.
To date, 10 passengers of private motor vehicles have been killed, accounting for 38 per cent of the overall fatalities. Seven private motor vehicle drivers have also been killed since the start of the year, accounting for 29 per cent of fatalities.
Motorcyclists account for four deaths, or 15 per cent while pedestrians account for three deaths or 12 per cent of all fatalities during the period. Two pedal cyclists have also been killed in traffic collisions this year.
Overall, 26 road users been killed in 20 fatal crashes since the start of the year. Fatalities decreased by 26 per cent when compared to prior year while fatal crashes decreased by 38 per cent when compared with similar period in 2025.
Meanwhile, the category of road users deemed most vulnerable – pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers – combined account for 35 per cent of all fatalities since the start of the year.
Males and females account for 69 per cent and 31 per cent respectively, of fatalities since January 1.
