Barnaby returns as favourite for Delapenha Memorial Trophy
Barnaby returns from a 169-day break to take on rivals in this afternoon’s $1.25-million Lloyd Lindbergh “Lindy” Delapenha Memorial Trophy at Caymanas Park, in what is expected to be a successful seasonal debut today.
The five-year-old American-bred bay horse Barnaby’s last race was on August 23, in the Distinctly Irish Trophy, where he finished fourth behind Girvano, Funcaandun, and Blue Vinyl.
Before that, Barnaby won the Ian Levy Cup on April 5, qualifying for the Mouttet Mile, in which he didn’t participate. He’s been training well, clocking 1:00.1 for five furlongs on January 25 and 1:13.0 for six furlongs on February 1, with four eight-furlong (1,600m) canter sessions in between.
Given his past performances, Barnaby seems to be a strong contender. Trainer Anthony Nunes has called champion jockey Raddesh Roman to ride Barnaby.
The Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over one mile (1,600m) is positioned as the eighth event on the nine-race card with a post time of 4:50 pm. The first race is at 12:00 pm.
Brenda Boy and Mark My Identity are both strong contenders in this seven-horse field, looking to challenge the favourite.
Brenda Boy has been consistently impressive, with no worse than third-place finishes in his last 10 races. He dead-heated with Mark My Identity for third place behind Oil Machine and Mack and Rome on Januar y 31, showcasing his reliability.
Mark My Identity has also been a very consistent sort. He has three consecutive third- place finishes at this level from as many outings and another brave bid is expected from him.
