Gov’t refutes reports it refused to sell gas to Cuba
KINGSTON, Jamaica—The Government is refuting reports from an overseas online publication that Jamaica turned away a Cuban-registered tanker seeking to refill on liquified petroleum gas (LPG).
The Ministry of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications in a media release on Monday, said the report does not mention any credible source of information to verify its claims. It said at no time was the government of Jamaica or any private entity involved in the country’s oil and gas industry contacted to verify the report.
“It is important to note that the country’s sole oil refinery, Petrojam, a 100 per cent-owned government-owned entity, has never exported LPG. Similarly, feedback from our private sector counterparts in the oil and gas sector shows that they also do not export LPG,” said Energy Minister Daryl Vaz.
The ministry said Petrojam continues to be Jamaica’s largest importer of LPG for industrial, commercial and household consumption locally.
It further said misinformation during this time might spark unnecessary fear and anxiety.
Members of the public, especially individuals on social media, are being reminded to seek information from credible news sources.
