UWI students launch Preston Scholarship Fund to support peers amid rising living costs
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Student leaders of Aston Preston Hall at The University of the West Indies, Mona, have launched the Preston Scholarship Fund, a student-led initiative to support residents experiencing financial hardship that threatens their ability to remain in university housing.
The fund, introduced as part of Aston Preston Hall Committee’s 30th anniversary commemoration, seeks to raise at least $500,000 to assist a minimum of 10 students with $50,000 toward residence fees for the upcoming academic year.
According to the committee, rising living costs have increased the risk of housing insecurity, affecting student retention and academic progress. The initiative calls for donations from Preston alumni, friends of Preston and sponsorships.
“This scholarship embodies our external affairs committee’s slogan, ‘Creating Ripple Effects: Tiny Actions Accumulate to Large-Scale Impact’. Each donation, no matter the size, directly uplifts our residents and strengthens the legacy of Aston Preston Hall,” said Dejanae Fagan, external affairs chairwoman.
“It is very difficult to focus on academics whilst worrying about eviction because you cannot pay hall fees,” added Shawn Palmer, deputy hall chairman.
Organisers note that while academic ability remains strong, financial barriers, particularly housing costs, are affecting students’ ability to continue their studies.
