Vietnam’s Hai Phòng signs Fletcher from MBU

Montego Bay United’s (MBU) Jourdain Fletcher signed with Vietnam League 1 team Hai Phòng FC on Monday.

Fletcher, 27, is the joint leading scorer in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL), with 12 goals, and MBU, the league leaders, wished him well.

“MBU is a club that will develop, recruit and give the best opportunities for our players,” the club said on its social media. “While we are about winning titles, we are also about building the future opportunities for footballers across Jamaica, and in particular western Jamaica.”

Fletcher, who started for the Jamaica men’s senior national team comprising mostly local based players who beat Grenada 1-0 in a friendly international last month, will be playing for his fourth overseas team.

After representing San Jacinto Junior College, and Eastern Florida State College in the United States, Fletcher also played in India for Gokulam FC, and Neroca FC, as well as KF Skënderbeu in the Albanian first division.

Fletcher also represented Mount Pleasant FA in the JPL between 2019 and 2022.

Hai Phòng have lost four of their last five games and are fifth in their league on 20 points from 13 games played. They are second Group H of the AFC Cup on 10 points from six games, two points behind Malaysian Super League team Sabah FC.

Fletcher will have just about two weeks to impress his new coaches, as they next play on March 1 against 11th placed-Thanh Hóa.
