So Lucky Am I emerges as Classic contender
So Lucky Am I, a three-year-old bay colt bred by Successful Native out of the traditional mare Ashtrid, announced his arrival on the racing scene with an encouraging win in the $1.05-million Mercury Sprint on Sunday, February 8, 2026.
Owned and trained by Ian Roberts and ridden by Bebeto Harvey, So Lucky Am I dominated the maiden special weight contest for native-bred three-year-old colts and geldings, sprinting to a 1¾ length victory over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight. The colt covered the distance in impressive style, clocking 1:00.4 (23.4 x 47.1). The win has positioned So Lucky Am I as a possible entrant in the upcoming Classic series of races.
So Lucky Am I broke off well at the start and settled behind Wah A Gwaan (Tajay Suckoo), who blazed the early trail. So Lucky Am I continued to bide his time well and responded well from the urgings from Harvey inside the final stages of the race for an eye-catching win in the end.
Wah A Gwaan finished second and Blythwood (Demar Williams) finished third.
