Market Bag: Plenty of variety, good prices at fully organic Ujima market in St Andrew
There is abundant variety of fresh, colorful vegetables at the Ujima Natural Farmers Market in St Andrew. And the prices aren’t too bad.
Observer Online was at the market last weekend, and filled our market bag with an array of food items including those that are not very common like Swiss chard, dinosaur kale and Jamaican broccoli.
“I like to eat Jamaican first, I do my best not to buy imported food, that’s the main reason why I am here,” one shopper told Market Bag host Carlysia Ramdeen. “And then you get stuff that you don’t normally see.”
Among the prices at the market, escallion was being sold for $300 a pound; tomato, $300 a pound; dinosaur kale, $400 a bunch; and celery for $600 a pound.
In the meantime, shoppers were also treated to a stir fry noodle dish by Executive Chef Brian Lumley, who said Ujima was among his “favourite” markets because it’s fully organic.
Tune in to an all-new Market Bag.
