Thompson-Herah to open season in 60m at Camperdown Classic
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Double Olympic 100m and 200m champion Elaine Thompson-Herah will make her long-awaited return to the track when she opens her season at the Camperdown Classic in the 60m on Saturday at the Ashenheim Stadium.
Thompson-Herah, who will be 34 years old in June, has not raced since June 9, 2024, when she finished ninth in the 100m at the New York Grand Prix, clocking 11.48 (-2.1 m/s).
Thompson-Herah, who won back-to-back 100 m and 200 m gold at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, will line up in the 60 m scheduled to start at 6:05 pm. She is the current 60 m outdoor record holder with 7.02, set in 2017.
She will face the emerging and powerful Thieanna Lee Terrelonge, formerly of Edwin Allen, now at Uptimum, who opened her season clocking 7.25 seconds.
Veteran Jura Levy of Swept, with a personal best of 7.24, is also there, along with Saniqua Bascombe of Trinidad and Tobago at Uptimum. She has a personal best of 7.22.
Thompson, Jamaica’s national record holder over the 100 m with a stunning 10.54, has a 60 m best of 7.02 for the 60m, and all eyes will be on her to see what kind of shape she is in under her new club, New Era.
Thompson-Herah has had an injury-plagued career, highlighted even more after she walked away from the MVP club.
She is currently being coached by Reynaldo Walcott, who previously coached Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce when she also left MVP.
