Vox Pop: Jamaicans share mixed views on new taxes on sweetened beverages, cigarettes, pure alcohol
KINGSTON, Jamaica—With Finance Minister Fayval Williams announcing that a tax will be imposed on sweetened non-sugary and other items such as cigarettes and pure alcohol to close the fiscal gap left by Hurricane Melissa, Observer Online took to the streets to hear how the public feel about the new taxes.
There were mixed views among members of the public, with some noting that the new taxes will not necessarily impact them and will yield positive results such as a healthier society. However, others believe that the new taxes can have negative effects, especially for consumers who will now have to pay more for the products.
