Canadian High Commission mourns mass shooting victims
The Canadian flag at the High Commission of Canada in Jamaica in Kingston is flying at half-mast as the North American country observes a national period of mourning following a deadly school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
Footage captured outside the High Commission show the flag lowered at its offices located at 3 West Kings House Road and 10 Waterloo Road, joining Canadian missions and federal buildings worldwide in honouring the victims of the February 10 tragedy.
The Government of Canada ordered flags to be flown at half-mast from February 11 until sunset on February 17, 2026, after the attack claimed eight lives, along with the shooter, and left 27 others injured. The incident is being described as one of the country’s deadliest mass shootings in recent history.
In a statement issued following the tragedy, Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was devastated by the violence and extended condolences to the families and communities affected. He also thanked first responders for their courage and confirmed federal officials are working closely with provincial authorities to support the affected community.
The half-mast directive applies to all federal buildings and establishments across Canada, including Parliament’s Peace Tower in Ottawa, as well as Canadian diplomatic missions abroad, including Jamaica.
The gesture in Kingston serves as part of a global show of solidarity as Canadians at home and overseas continue to mourn the lives lost.
