WATCH: Thompson-Herah happy to be back, admits to ‘butterflies’
Elaine Thompson-Herah made a return to the track on Saturday after nearly two years away from competition.
The two-time Olympic double sprint champion, who ran once in 2024, was third in the women’s 60m at the Camperdown Classics held at Ashenheim Stadium, running 7.24 seconds (-1.7m/s). Levanya Williams won the race in a personal best 7.17 seconds with Trinidad’s Shanique Bascombe second in 7.23 seconds.
Thompson-Herah, who had been sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury, admitted in a post-race interview to feeling some jitters as her return drew closer.
“A little bit of butterflies when I got to the blocks,” she told journalists. “I was okay during the warm ups but once it was time to get into the blocks, there was a little bit of butterflies but I know how to control that.”
She expressed that she felt pain-free after the race and said she was trying to get rid of “months and years of rust”.
In the meantime, World Championships 200m medalist Bryan Levell won the men’s 60m, running 6.56 seconds (-1.0m/s), beating Bouwahjgie Nkrumie who ran a personal best 6.62 seconds, the same time as third-placed Rasheed Foster.
