A Living Palette
As Style Observer Gardening (SOG) concludes its tour of Sharon Sterling’s multi-tiered orchid sanctuary in Upper St Andrew, the devotion of the Beautiful Blooms principal is clear. The love and labour poured into her garden has transformed it into both a personal sanctuary and a source of inspiration.
For those dreaming of their own orchid paradise, Sterling’s secret is simple: It’s all about the environment. Sterling achieves this success through a balanced strategy, matching consistent watering with the clever positioning of orchids to ensure varied moisture needs are met individually.
“Adding an irrigation system is a good investment. If this is not possible, ensure there is easy access to water. Additionally, make sure that you avoid growing plants with dissimilar watering requirements in the same area,” Sterling advises.
Creating an environment in which orchids can flourish hinges on moderated light and a strict regiment of feeding and pest control — elements Sterling identifies as vital to ensuring they truly thrive.
“To help create a micro climate conducive to most orchids, you can use palms in pots to reduce direct sun exposure,” Sterling suggests. “Ensure that you have a regular feeding routine as well as proactive pest and disease management.”
