Titchfield, St Mary High cop Eastern Champs titles
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Titchfield High boys and St Mary High girls were the respective winners of the Eastern Championship held at the National Stadium on Tuesday.
Titchfield High amassed 367 points and were well clear of Oberlin High in second spot on 212 points.
St Mary’s High were third with 200 points, Port Antonio High were fourth on 180 points and Happy Grove rounded out the top five with 169 points.
The top 10 was completed by Buff Bay High (123), St Mary Technical (111), Morant Bay High (110), St Thomas Technical (55) and Robert Lightbourne High (53).
In the girls’ section, St Mary High rattled up 295 points and won by 11 points ahead of Marymount High on 284.33 points. Titchfield High were third with 227 points and Oberlin High fourth on 183.33 points. Port Antonio completed the top five with 162 points.
The top 10 is completed by Happy Grove (88), Buff Bay High (80.5), Morant Bay High (79), St Mary Technical (71) and St Thomas Technical (37.83).
Titchfield boys closed the championship in style, winning the 4×400 relay in a record 3:21.53 minutes, dipping below the 3:21.71 minutes held by Glengoffe High since 2004.
Port Antonio girls won the 4×400 in 4:02.55 minutes ahead of St Mary High with 4:07.55 minutes and Titchfield in third with 4:07.69 minutes.
There were 19 records, including Jaquan Souden of Happy Grove High, who set two records in the Class One high jump and long jump. He soared to an impressive 2.06m in the high jump and will be one of the favourites at the all-island Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championship in March.
The previous record was held by Buff Bay’s Romaine Beckford of 2.05m in 2019. Earlier, he leapt to 7.30m, surpassing the previous record of 7.02m held by Dean Swimmer of Morant Bay since 2007.
