14 vie for Mr and Miss Law (UWI) titles
Fourteen students, seven males and seven females, from the Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies (Mona), are competing for the titles of Mr and Miss Law.
The coronation will take place on the roof of the Faculty of Law on Saturday March 7.
According to Diamonique Brown, first vice president of the Mona Law Society and organiser of the pageant, the contestants will go through several fast-track events leading up to the coronation.
“Leading up to the finals, they (the contestants) have several fast-track events that they will be engaged in. These include debate, athletics, talent, fundraising, cooking and online voting. On coronation night, they have three different areas that they will be judged on: evening wear, legal attire, sports attire. Areas such as poise and how well they answer questions will also be taken into consideration,” Brown told Observer Online on Wednesday during a training session for the contestants on campus.
Brown explained the selection process for this year’s contestants.
“We issued an application form and anyone who is a first-year or second-year student, or even a first-year direct entrant or part-time student, can apply. Along with members of the team, we go through the applications and made our decision. Normally, we don’t really have a huge turnout of males but this year it was overwhelming,” she disclosed.
The seven males competing for the Mr Law title are: Mr Legal Eagle, Javier Sellars; Mr Rule of Law, Victor Stuart; Mr Legal Reform, Jaleel Smith; Mr Human Rights, Calbert LaBeach; Mr Legacy in Motion, Akheil Foster; Mr Natural Justice, Jailon Bailey; and Mr Due Process, Keneil Bernard.
