Faulkland, Reggae Youths open St James/Sandals Major League with wins
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Faulkland FC and Reggae Youths were winners over the weekend as the St James Football Association/Sandals Resorts International Major League kicked off.
Faulkland FC, who made a return to club competition after a one-season break, beat Real MoBay AFC 3-1 on Saturday, while Reggae Youths edged MoBay United Youths 2-1 on Sunday, both in Zone A.
On Monday, Montego Bay Boys Club opened their season with a 2-0 win over Bogue FC at the UDC Field.
Faulkland FC, who competed in the 2022-23 Jamaica Premier League, lead Zone A on goal difference after they had goals from Rasheed Brown, Mikhail Samuels and Shanoy Anderson, while Devoie Douglas had equalised for Real MoBay AFC early in the second half.
Reggae Youths, who had won consecutive titles and lost in last season’s final to Flankers FC, led their game 2-0 at half-time with goals from Natoneil Wilson in the 32nd minute and Anthony Gooden in the 44th minute.
Kevin Wilson pulled back a goal for Montego Bay United Youths when he scored in the 52nd minute.
Montego Bay Boys Club scored both goals in the first half of their game — Kaneja Topping in the third minute and Akko Miller in the 26th — to get their campaign off to a positive start.
On Saturday an own goal denied former champions Granville United as they had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Norwood Strikers.
Andre Tate gave Granville United the lead in the 47th minute and Ajam Clarke doubled the advantage in the 51st minute before Romario Dent cut the deficit to one when he scored for Norwood Strikers in the 60th minute.
An own goal in the 69th minute from Kimmaney Smith, however, saw the teams sharing the points.
