Gov’t moves to maximize Jamaica’s gains from CPL T20 return
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Government is taking steps to ensure that Jamaica secures maximum benefits from the return of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 cricket tournament this year.
This was disclosed by Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, during remarks at the ministry in Kingston, where the tournament’s return was announced.
She advised that Cabinet has approved the return of the regional T20 tournament this summer, marking its first staging in Jamaica since 2019, and described the move as a welcome development.
Grange indicated that the Government has entered into a new partnership with the CPL and incoming franchise holders to ensure Jamaica derives wider benefits, extending beyond the matches themselves, adding “we have worked out some details”.
She added that the collaboration will also advance destination marketing and cultural promotion through coordinated efforts among ministries and stakeholders.
“We will be able to promote Brand Jamaica… Destination Jamaica, because it’s a combination of two ministries partnering with the CPL and the new franchise holders,” Grange said, noting that further details will be provided during a forthcoming press conference with league officials and franchise representatives.
The minister shared that the matches are expected to coincide with Jamaica’s Independence period, creating an extended season of celebration for residents and visitors.
She also signalled plans for entertainment events to complement the matches, enhancing the overall experience.
Meanwhile, Grange expressed optimism about the year ahead, noting that despite recent challenges, Jamaica remains resilient and poised to capitalise on major sporting and cultural events.
“Although we have had challenges… we are going to make 2026 a great year,” she declared.
