Quarter-final round heats up in ISSA urban youth football
WOLMER’S Boys’ recorded the biggest margin of victory in the opening round of the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Burger King Urban Under-14 competition while St Andrew Technical (STATHS) were in impressive form in the Mighty Malt Under-16 category.
With the top eight schools in both age categories jostling for early group positions, it was Wolmer’s who were most impressive among the under-14s after overpowering Campion College by a 3-0 margin to take control of Group A.
In the other Group A fixture, Hillel Academy edged home team Excelsior 2-1 at Mountain View Avenue to get their first-ever win in the quarter-final stage of the competition, and will face group favourites Wolmer’s at home in their next match on Thursday.
Campion is set to travel to Excelsior in their next game, which will take place on Friday, with both teams eager to get their first win in the quarter-final stage.
In Group B, favourites Kingston College — the defending champions — and Jamaica College both got off to winning starts. KC required a last-minute strike to see off STATHS in their match on North Street while JC were a bit more comfortable in their 2-0 home win against Eltham High.
JC will on Thursday host STATHS, while KC will travel to Eltham. If JC and KC win their respective games, they will both secure passage to the semi-finals, with their face-off next week only serving to settle group honours and their semi-final pairing.
In the under-16 category, STATHS made it clear that they will not be going quietly into the night as they look to successfully defend their title, with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Eltham to get their quarter-finals group stage off to a positive start.
In the other Group A game, Mona surprised St George’s College 2-0 at Winchester Park to put a serious dent in the Georgians’ title hopes.
In Thursday’s games Mona will welcome STATHS, while St George’s will host Eltham in a virtual must-win game.
In Group B, Kingston College continued their march with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Wolmer’s Boys’, and Jamaica College did well to clip Excelsior 2-1 in the other matchup.
JC will host Wolmer’s on Thursday in the group’s next round of fixtures while Excelsior will welcome KC on Friday.
