Safe schools must extend beyond classroom walls
Dear Editor,
Since the report emerged on Monday about the sale of various paraphernalia to students at school gates, my phone has been incessantly ringing with inquiries. Concerned parents, community members, and former students have questioned whether this situation is genuine, and how such practices are allowed to persist. The consistent response is that now is the time for us to be vigilant and enhance our efforts to protect our children.
Our children already encounter numerous challenges during their commute to and from school. A particularly troubling issue is the apparent moral decline in society, whereby some adults, who should be safeguarding children’s well-being, are instead exploiting them for financial profit. This exploitation not only endangers children but also adds to the distractions that hamper their academic focus and development.
School leaders face significant difficulties in managing issues such as substance abuse, gambling, inappropriate relationships, and even physical altercations facilitated through social media. When parents are contacted about these problems, schools often receive limited support, making it harder to implement effective interventions.
It is essential that parents, community members, and advocacy groups collaborate with schools to address these challenges. Additionally, vendors operating at school gates must be held accountable. The shift from selling harmless snacks to exploiting students’ vulnerability is deeply concerning.
All vendors near school premises should be properly registered and authorised. They should obtain permits from municipal authorities, hold valid food handlers’ permits, provide official identification, share current contact details, and disclose their items for sale. Those who do not comply should face suitable sanctions.
Proactive measures are necessary to protect our children’s safety and well-being. Child abuse and victimisation manifest in various forms, and we must remain vigilant. I urge municipal authorities and relevant agencies to intensify monitoring and regulation of street vendors operating near schools.
This issue requires urgent action. Developing and enforcing a comprehensive policy framework will help safeguard students and restore confidence in the areas surrounding our schools. Our children deserve safe environments that support their growth, dignity, and future prospects.
