Major safety issue on the north-south highway
Dear Editor,
I wish to draw urgent attention to the deteriorating condition of the north-south highway.
While we commend the Government for this vital infrastructure, its current state raises serious safety concerns for the motoring public.
The white lane markings along significant stretches of this toll road have faded to the point of near invisibility. During night driving or in heavy rain it becomes a guessing game to distinguish lanes. This ambiguity is a recipe for disaster, increasing the risk of sideswipes and running off the road.
Furthermore, the cat’s eyes, or reflective road studs, that once guided drivers are largely non-functional (the ones in the asphalt). They have either been worn down or stopped reflecting completely. A toll road, which we pay a premium to use, should guarantee a superior level of safety. Currently, it does not.
We pay tolls for a service. It is the responsibility of the operating company and the relevant authorities to ensure that this revenue is reinvested in proper and timely maintenance. The current situation is not merely an inconvenience, it is a hazard that compromises the safety of every driver and passenger.
I urge the relevant parties to conduct an immediate inspection, repaint the lines, and replace the reflectors before a serious accident occurs.
