Market Bag: Tomatoes now $50 as Floyd Green shops at ‘Curry’
KINGSTON, Jamaica — As Jamaica continues its recovery from Hurricane Melissa, prices for agricultural produce at Coronation Market in Kingston are trending downward, with tomatoes now selling for as low as $50, signalling a strong rebound in local food production.
On this week’s episode of the Jamaica Observer’s Market Bag, Minister of Agriculture Floyd Green joins host Carlysia Ramdeen to highlight some initiatives introduced by the ministry that have contributed to the industry’s rebound from the disaster in late October 2025.
Consumers are also benefitting from reduced prices on other produce, including carrots at $100 per pound and cabbage at $150.
Minister Green praised the resilience and dedication of the country’s farmers for the turnaround.
“What we are seeing is a result of that. A combination of the seeds, a combination of the water, a combination of operations, plus just some excellent farmers, some really strong farmers who were determined to ensure we could feed Jamaica again,” Green said.
