‘Loaded’ Jamal Steohenson sped to 10.36s to win Corporate Area 100m crown
KINGSTON, Jamaica—After speeding to 10.36 seconds (+1.1) in the blue ribbon Class One 100m event at the Corporate Area Championship on Friday night, Calabar High’s Jamal Stephenson said he is “very loaded” an indicator that he will be running very fast at next month’s Boys and Girls Championship.
Stephenson, who was controversially disqualified from the 100m final at Champs last year, held off a pack of surging runners to win by one hundredth of a second from Tyreece Foreman of St George’s College in 10.37.
Nyron Wade of Kingston College showed that he is back to near his best from injury, finishing fast for third in 10.40, just ahead of Malik Nugent of Excelsior High in 10.41.
“Very loaded. I’m not ready as yet, but I’m ready,” Stephenson told the Jamaica Observer.
I’m feeling very grateful, you know, give all the glory to God. I am just continuing to do the right thing and just listening to my coach, my support system, and just work,” he added.
Stephenson, the reigning Carifta Games 100m champion, said he is ready for the expected challenge at Champs in six weeks’ time as he will enter as the favourite having run 10.24 last year. But he is just as hungry as every other runner.
“Everybody wants to win, you know, I want to win, so that’s the goal right now,” said Stephenson.
The diminutive and explosive runner has his eyes set on securing a spot on Jamaica’s team to the Under-20 World Championship.
“I just want to make the team, represent my country, and I’m going to do my best,” he added.
