A 31-year-old man, said to be his father, and an eight-year-old boy are nursing injuries arising from the shooting.
Observer Online understands that sometime after 1am, gunmen went to a home on Nelson Street where there is also a business establishment and posed as customers before opening fire on the father and his family.
When the shooting subsided, the father, Zaylon and the other boy were found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to hospital where Zaylon was pronounced dead and the father and other child admitted.
“I am condemning in the strongest terms this act of criminality. I extend my condolences to the family of the three year old boy who was shot and am hoping for the best concerning the eight year old who was injured and the 31 year old man who was also shot,” McKenzie said in a press release.
“The incident is most regrettable. We cannot allow our community to return to a state where violent crime is the norm,” he continued. “I appeal to residents to tell the police what they know to enable a breakthrough in investigations as soon as possible. The perpetrator(s) of this act of criminality must be brought to swift and lawful justice.”
The Kingston West MP went further.
“In fact, I am offering a $600,000 reward to anyone who gives credible information to law enforcement which leads to the arrest and charge of the person or persons responsible for this wicked act which resulted in a child being murdered and two other residents, including an eight year old, being injured,” he said, adding “Enough is enough. We must resolve as communities to indicate that this kind of savagery will not be tolerated”.
The police have mounted a high level investigation into the incident and McKenzie said he will be taking steps to ensure that adequate grief counselling is offered to the family of the deceased.
