Reggae Boyz beat Martinique 2-0 in international friendly
Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz continued their World Cup playoff preparation with a 2-0 win over Martinique in an international friendly at the Stade Pierrre Aliker in Fort De France, Martinique on Saturday.
Nickyle Ellis opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, then assisted Daniel Green in the 64th minute to seal the victory.
Ellis, who plays for Racing United, scored his first goal for Jamaica in his second appearance. It was Green’s second goal for Jamaica and his first since 2018.
Head coach Rudolph Speid said he was satisfied as he thought the players were in total control of the game.
“They moved the ball well. I just thought that they really stand out in the first half,” Speid noted.
It was Jamaica’s first win over Martinique since 2001, when Andy “Bomber” Williams scored the winner. Speid thought Martinique was a good test for the Boyz.
“I thought they started sprightly, very well initially, but I think as soon as we scored, they had to dig a little deeper,” said the coach.
“I thought they put up a really good fight until we scored the second goal and I suppose we were just in cruise control. The game would have dropped in quality somewhat when they started to make changes and ourselves,” he explained.
Jamaica are set to face New Caledonia on March 26 in a FIFA World Cup playoff match in Mexico and potentially Africa’s DR Congo in the final on March 31 for a spot at this summer’s global showpiece.
