Grange reaffirms commitment to Bustamante celebrations
MINISTER of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange has confirmed that plans are afoot for the annual celebrations to honour the 142nd anniversary of the birth of Jamaica’s first prime minister and National Hero Sir Alexander Bustamante, both at his birthplace in Blenheim, Hanover, and at National Heroes’ Park in Kingston on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
The commemorative activities will begin with a floral tribute ceremony at National Heroes Park at 9:00 am, followed by a birthday tribute ceremony at Blenheim at 11:00 am, the Jamaica Cultural development Commission (JCDC) said in a news release.
In addition, the Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles, Jnr has planned a series of activities in the Clarendon South Eastern constituency where Sir Alexander served as Member of Parliament for approximately 18 years. His long-standing service will be recognised through commemorative activities led by Minister Charles.
Addressing recent suggestions that the celebrations in Hanover may be hampered, Minister Grange pointed to the Government’s demonstrated commitment to safeguarding the observance.
“As was the case in February 2025 when concerns were raised about funding, the Government, through the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, acted decisively in mandating the JCDC to fully fund and execute the Bustamante birthday celebrations in Blenheim, Hanover, thereby safeguarding this important national observance at his birthplace,” the release quoted Grange.
She noted that the annual commemorations remain an important fixture on the national calendar, giving Jamaicans the opportunity to reflect on the life and leadership of a statesman whose advocacy for workers’ rights and national development helped shape modern Jamaica.
“We recognise that public resources are currently under strain due to recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa, and we appreciate the understanding of our stakeholders. However, the value of heritage commemorations, particularly for young Jamaicans still coping with the impact of the hurricane, cannot be understated. These celebrations offer a sense of continuity, pride and inspiration at a time when our people, especially our youth, need it most,” Grange added.
She urged all sectors of society to support and participate in both the Hanover and Kingston commemorations.
“We encourage every school community, youth group, and cultural organisation to attend and participate in the celebrations. Let us work together to ensure that the legacy of Sir Alexander Bustamante remains alive, not only in ceremonial remembrance, but in the hearts and minds of Jamaica’s future leaders,” Grange said.
The JCDC said it can be contacted for further details on scheduled activities or to confirm participation.
