Seymore, Douglas double up at Western Champs

Seymore, Douglas double up at Western Champs

William Knibb Memorial High School’s Sanjay Seymore and Holland High School’s Shanoya Douglas won their respective Class 1 sprint doubles at the County of Cornwall Athletics Association/GraceKennedy Western Championships at GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport yesterday.

Seymore set a World Under-20 leading 10.26 seconds (1.4m/s) in the semi-finals before winning the final in 10.29 seconds (1.7m/s) hours later.

Douglas ran a season’s best 11.37 seconds (1.4m/s) to win the Girls’ Class 1 100m and break the 22-year-old meet record of 11.39 seconds set by Michelle Mattis of Manning’s in 2005.

Mount Alvernia High School’s Giana Murray won the Class 2 girls sprint double, improving on last year when she won the Class 3 100m but was second in the 200m.

The Class 1 boys’ final lived up to expectations as Seymore beat Johan-Ramaldo Smythe of Holland in both races. Smythe, who ran a personal best 10.32 seconds in the semi-finals, was second in the final in 10.37 seconds, with Green Island High School’s Oshane Jervis third in 10.57 seconds.

Ajannie Kelly of St Elizabeth Technical High School won the Class 2 100m in 10.77 seconds (1.3m/s), ahead of Mark Braham of Rusea’s High School in 11.01 seconds and Jamaal Graham of Herbert Morrison Technical High School in 11.09 seconds.

Kemar Lee of St Elizabeth Technical won the Class 3 100m in 11.54 seconds (0.5m/s). Jamali Laing of William Knibb was second in 11.60 seconds and Deozante Griffiths of Munro College third in 11.70 seconds.

Douglas was unchallenged as she completed her double, repeating her Class 2 sweep from last year. Mount Alvernia’s Sharla Bell ran 11.99 seconds for second in the 100m and teammate Shanan Salmon 12.19 seconds for third.

Murray won the Class 2 100m in 11.66 seconds (1.2m/s), beating Mickelia Henlon of Holland (12.16) and Keanna Parker of Maggotty High School (12.19).

Mount Alvernia’s Veneisha Pottinger led a 1-2 finish in the Class 3 100m with 12.00 seconds (0.1m/s), followed by Briana Chin in 12.40 seconds. Mikayla Whyte of Lacovia High School was third in 12.47 seconds.

Deana Ellis of Lacovia won the Class 4 100m in 12.37 seconds (0.5m/s), beating K-Jhannay Medley of Sydney Pagon High School (12.82) and Sugel Evans of Lacovia (13.08).

Earlier, Seymore ran a wind-aided 20.83 seconds (3.8m/s) in the 200m, ahead of Smythe (21.20) and Jervis of Green Island (21.57).

Rusea’s Tiene Barrett retained the Class 2 200m title in 21.94 seconds (0.2m/s). Kelly of St Elizabeth Technical was second in a wind-aided 22.44 seconds (2.3m/s) and Nicolas Jones of Lacovia third in 22.67 seconds (2.3m/s).

Darrian Francis of Lacovia won the Class 3 200m in a wind-aided 22.98 seconds (3.2m/s). Lee of St Elizabeth Technical was second in 23.70 seconds and Nickolas James of Godfrey Stewart High School third in 24.00 seconds.

Douglas, the bronze medallist at the 2024 World Athletics Under-20 Championships, won the Class 1 200m in a wind-aided 23.34 seconds (2.1m/s), ahead of Bell (25.32) and Salmon (25.72).

Murray won the Class 2 200m in 24.41 seconds (1.6m/s), beating Daniellia Dixon of William Knibb (24.90) and Marika Williams of St Elizabeth Technical (25.45, 3.4m/s).

The Class 3 200m gold went to Pottinger in 24.90 seconds (2.5m/s). Kerian Jarrett of Maggotty was second in 24.98 seconds (2.2m/s) and Khortnie Eccleston of William Knibb third in 25.17 seconds (2.5m/s).

St Elizabeth Technical’s Santino Distin won the Class 1 Boys’ high and long jump double.

He cleared 2.00m in the high jump ahead of Ainsworth Ferguson of Munro and Jayden Wooliston of Herbert Morrison, both at 1.90m.

Distin later jumped a personal best 6.96m (-3.6m/s) to win the long jump, beating Rodeeki Walters of St Elizabeth Technical (6.71m) and Ferguson (6.29m).

Cornwall College’s Zhi-Hew Whitter won the Class 2 long jump with 6.61m (-1.5m/s), ahead of Shavoy Stewart of St Elizabeth Technical (6.17m) and Andrew Reid of Cornwall (6.04m).

Jada Lee of St Elizabeth Technical won the Girls’ Class 1 discus with 37.35m. Tahira Lee of William Knibb was second with 25.85m.

Daveika Lewis of St Elizabeth Technical won the Class 2 discus with 45.40m. Paulamdra James of Godfrey Stewart was second with 38.32m and Belance Bennett of St Elizabeth Technical third with 36.65m.
